One of the most common questions I’m asked as a newborn photographer is: “What should we wear for our newborn photos?”
It’s such a great question—because the right outfits can help your photos feel timeless, relaxed, and beautifully connected.
If you’re unsure where to start, here’s a simple, stress-free guide to help you choose outfits that photograph well and feel true to you. These tips are based on years of experience working with families across the Western Suburbs of Melbourne
Keep It Simple: Neutrals Are Your Best Friend in Newborn Photography
Neutrals always work. Soft colours like white, cream, beige, light grey, and gentle pastels keep the focus on your family—especially your baby’s sweet little details.
Neutral tones:
Compliment all skin tones
Create a calm, timeless look
Work beautifully in natural or studio light
Want to include a little colour? Go for it! Soft earthy tones like rust, olive, or dusty blue add personality without taking over the image. I always encourage families to share any colour preferences in the pre-session questionnaire so I can help style accordingly.

For Mum: Comfort and Softness First
You’ve just had a baby, so let’s keep it comfy and beautiful. Flowy dresses, soft knitwear, and neutral colours are perfect. Think:
Light dresses with room to move
Natural textures like linen or cotton
I also offer a small collection of wardrobe pieces available to borrow in-studio—ideal if you’d rather not shop beforehand. Many of the mums I photograph in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne love having this option ready to go.

For Dad: Relaxed and Classic
There’s no need for anything too formal—just something comfortable and coordinated. Stick to solid colours like white, beige, grey, or pale blue. A plain t-shirt or button-up shirt with chinos or soft jeans is ideal.
Avoid logos or bold patterns, as they can pull attention away from the connection in your photos.

For Baby: I've Got It Covered
I have a lovely selection of wraps, and little outfits here in the studio, designed for newborn photography. Everything is soft, simple, and perfect for photos. Unless there’s a special outfit you’d love to include, you don’t need to bring anything extra.
My goal is to make your newborn session as relaxed as possible
What About Siblings?
If big brothers or sisters are joining the session, keep their outfits comfy and simple too. Light, neutral tones work beautifully—think cotton dresses or a t-shirt and pants.
And don’t stress if they’re a little wiggly on the day. As a primary school teacher and a mum myself, I know how to make toddlers feel at ease and have fun along the way - I also have a toy box with colouring pencils, books, a train set and even a baby doll for them to wrap.
Need Help Deciding?
I’m always happy to chat through outfit ideas before your session. You can send photos or simply describe what you have in mind, and I’ll help guide you from there.
If you’re looking for a warm, relaxed newborn photographer in Melbourne’s Western Suburbs, I’d love to help you create beautiful memories with your little one. Head to my website and complete the booking form to start planning something truly special for your family.
