What to Wear to Your Newborn Photography Session

One of the most common questions I get from parents before a newborn session is: “What should we wear?” I completely understand, this is such a special time, and you want your photos to look timeless while still feeling like “you" (and comfortable in the postpartum period!)

I’m always here to help guide you through the process. Below are my tips (plus some links to dress suggestions you can browse through!) to make choosing outfits stress-free.

Keep It Soft and Neutral

Soft, neutral colours photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your baby. Think whites, creams, beiges, and muted pastels. These tones also complement my style of editing and are timeless.

Avoid Busy Patterns

While a subtle texture (like a light knit or linen) adds depth, bold patterns or logos can distract from the connection in the photos. Stick to simple designs if you can.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Rather than dressing everyone in the same colour, think about coordinating shades. For example, if you’re wearing a soft cream dress, your partner could wear a white or beige shirt. This creates a cohesive look without feeling too “matchy-matchy.”

Comfort Is Key

Newborn sessions can last a couple of hours, so wear something you feel comfortable and relaxed in. Flowing dresses or tops with a bit of movement photograph beautifully and allow you to cuddle your baby naturally. I also recommend considering whether you will be able to feed your baby in your outfit if you are breastfeeding.

For Baby

I provide wraps, blankets and some simple outfits for your newborn, but if you have a sentimental piece or a special outfit you’d like to include, feel free to bring it along. Just keep it simple and soft.
