As a newborn photographer based in Melbourne, one of the most common questions I hear from new parents is, “Should we have our newborn session at home or in the studio?”
It’s such a good question, and the truth is, it's such an individual decision. Every family is different, and both options have their benefits. My goal is always to help you find what suits your family best and create a calm, relaxed session where you feel completely comfortable.
Whether you’d love the polished look of a studio gallery or the warmth of photos taken in your own space, here’s a little guide to help you decide what might feel right for you.

The Benefits of Studio Sessions
Studio Newborn Photography sessions are ideal if you’d like a shorter, more structured day. Everything is ready to go when you arrive, props, wraps, outfits, lighting. You can sit back and relax while I take care of the rest.
You don’t have to worry about finding space at home, tidying up, or waiting for me to set up and pack down equipment. The studio environment also gives me complete control over the lighting and temperature, which helps create consistent, beautifully styled images.
There’s plenty of variety available. While some people imagine studio sessions are just simple backdrops, that’s definitely not the case, we can include backlit setups, lifestyle-style sets, detailed close-ups, and a mix of neutral or textured backdrops to suit your taste.
And while I photograph your baby, you can enjoy a comfy spot on the couch and some quiet time, while older siblings play with the toys and colouring books I have ready.
The Benefits of In-Home Newborn Photography Sessions
For some families, staying home is exactly what they need in those first few weeks. You don’t have to pack a nappy bag, rush out the door, or plan around feeding and nap times. Everything you need is right there.
In-home sessions also allow for a lovely mix of studio-style posing and natural lifestyle photos, including sweet moments in your baby’s nursery, cuddles on the couch, and even the chance to include fur babies in your photos. It’s a wonderful way to capture your family’s story in the place where you’re making so many new memories.
In-home sessions bring a relaxed, natural feel that truly reflects your family’s life right now.
So Which Should You Choose?
If you’d like a shorter, more streamlined experience and love the idea of a polished, styled gallery, the studio might be perfect for you.
If you’d prefer something a little more relaxed and personal, surrounded by the comfort of home. then an in-home session could be perfect.
No matter which you choose, my goal is always the same: to create a calm, relaxed session where you feel supported, comfortable, and completely at ease.
There’s no one “right” choice, just the one that feels right for your family.
