Hey there, mum-to-be!
As a mother of two and a newborn photographer, I know firsthand how beautiful, transformative and challenging those first few weeks after birth can be. The postpartum period is all about healing, adjusting, and getting to know your new little one, and your new role as a parent.
I’ve put together a list of postpartum essentials and a hospital bag checklist based on my own experiences and conversations I have had with family and my wonderful clients.

Postpartum Must-Haves
1. Comfy, Cozy Clothes
After giving birth, comfort is key. Stock up on soft, loose-fitting clothes like nursing-friendly tops, stretchy leggings, and cosy pyjamas. You’ll want to feel as comfy as possible while recovering.
2. Nursing Essentials
If you’re planning to breastfeed, having the right gear on hand can make life so much easier. A few good nursing bras, plenty of breast pads (disposable and reusable to see which you prefer), and nipple cream are must-haves. And if you haven’t heard of it yet, the Haakaa breast pump is a game changer—perfect for catching letdown and building up a milk stash in the first few weeks without all the fuss.
3. Postpartum Pads
Post-birth bleeding is a given, so make sure you have some heavy-duty postpartum pads. In those first few days, maternity pads are your best friend. As the bleeding lightens up, you can switch to something lighter.
4. Perineal Care + A Donut Pillow
Whether you have a vaginal birth or a C-section, your body’s going to need some TLC. Cooling pads and perineal sprays can offer much-needed relief. And if sitting becomes uncomfortable, a donut pillow can work wonders—it's like sitting on a cloud when you’re feeling sore, I loved mine after my second birth and wish I had one for my first!
5. Stay Hydrated and Nourished
You’ll be so focused on your newborn that it’s easy to forget to eat and drink. Keep a water bottle close by and some healthy snacks within arm’s reach, if you can, stock up on muesli bars before the birth. Quick, nourishing meals that you can heat up easily are a lifesaver when you're too tired to cook.
6. Your Support Crew
Lean on your partner, family, and friends as much as you need. Don’t be afraid to ask for help with meals, laundry, or even just holding the baby while you grab a quick shower. You don’t have to do it all yourself!

Your Hospital Bag Checklist
Getting your hospital bag ready ahead of time means one less thing to stress about when the big day arrives.
Even if you are hoping for a short stay, it could be longer than you expected and it will still be good to have those items in an easy to find place at home if you do come home quickly
Here’s what I recommend packing:
For You:
Maternity Pads
Some hospitals provide some, but it’s good to have your own, especially if there’s a particular brand you like (I loved TOM)
Comfy Clothes
Think stretchy, loose dark coloured pants, loose tops, and a couple of pairs of pyjamas
Nursing Bras
+ Breast Pads: Essential for those early days of feeding.
Toiletries
The basics like a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and lip balm. Pack something that makes you feel good too, a favourite cream or moisturiser.
Perineal Care
Peri Bottle and Soothing Pads
Snacks
For during or after birth, bring some of your favourite snacks to keep your energy up. Healthy, quick and easy snacks you can have while you are breastfeeding, nap trapped, and very early postpartum. A big water bottle or jug nearby is also a great idea!
Long Phone Charger + Entertainment
A fully charged phone (and long charger - you don’t know how far away your closest power point might be) is a must, along with a good book or playlist.
Important Documents
Medicare card, any hospital paperwork, and your birth plan if you have one.
For Baby:
Onesies and Mittens
Pack a couple of newborn onesies, mittens (or socks work well and are longer so stay on better) to protect those tiny faces, and a beanie.
Nappies + Wipes
While some hospitals provide some, it’s always nice to have your own.
Swaddles, Sleeping Bags, Wraps
Perfect for keeping your baby feeling safe and snug. I personally loved the Love to Dream Sleeping bags.
Car Seat
Make sure it’s properly installed before heading to the hospital.
Going Home Outfit
A cute little outfit for your baby’s first trip home.
For Your Partner or Support Person
Change of Clothes
Something comfy if they’re staying overnight.
Toiletries
Just the basics to stay fresh, deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste
Snacks + Drinks
It could be a long day for them too!
Camera or Phone
To capture those first precious moments.
Final Thoughts
The postpartum period can feel like a whirlwind, but being prepared can help you focus on what really matters—bonding with your new little one. Remember, there’s no rush to “bounce back.” Take things at your own pace, lean on your support system, and be kind to yourself.
And when you’re ready, capturing these precious moments with a newborn photo session is a beautiful way to remember just how tiny they once were. If you’re thinking about scheduling a session or want to learn more, I’m here to help.
Congrats on this incredible journey—you’ve got this!
