When should I book Maternity photos? | Maternity Photographer Melbourne West

When Is the Best Time to Have Maternity Photos Taken?

If you're thinking about having maternity photos taken, one of the first questions you might have is, “How many weeks should I be?”

Generally, I recommend having your maternity photography session between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy, however I have had women book their session at 24 weeks, and others much later.

Ideally we wait for your bump to be beautifully noticeable, but you're still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy your session.

Why 28–34 weeks?

By around 28 weeks, your bump is usually lovely and round, making it a beautiful time to capture your pregnancy.

Waiting until much later can mean you are feeling more tired, uncomfortable or simply ready to slow down and rest. Your baby may also decide to make an early appearance!

That doesn't mean you can't have maternity photos outside this window. Every pregnancy is different, and if you're feeling good at 35 or 36 weeks, we can absolutely still capture some beautiful photographs.

What if I'm only 25 or 26 weeks?

That's completely okay too.

Some mums have a beautiful, obvious bump earlier in pregnancy, while others don't show as much until later. If you're worried that your bump isn't “big enough”, don't be!

Maternity photography is about capturing you, your pregnancy and this little person you're waiting to meet.

If you're unsure about when to book, feel free to get in touch and we can work out what will suit you best.

When should I book my maternity photography session?

I recommend booking your maternity session in your second trimester. Maternity sessions are generally booked a few weeks ahead, and booking early gives us more flexibility to find a date that falls within your ideal window.

If you're also planning newborn photos, this is a great time to book both sessions. We can get your maternity session organised and then make sure your newborn session is reserved around your due date.

Can my partner and children be included?

Absolutely!

Your maternity session doesn't have to be all about beautiful solo portraits. I love including partners, children, and even pets too.

We can capture the excitement of becoming a family of three, four, five or however many little people are already part of your family.

There will be a mixture of photographs together and some beautiful portraits of you and your bump.

What should I wear?

You don't need to buy a special outfit for your maternity photography session.

I have a client wardrobe available, with maternity-friendly pieces that photograph beautifully and help you feel confident and comfortable. I also personally love the jeans and white button up shirt combo!

I'm always happy to help with outfit ideas and styling before your session.

Where are maternity sessions held?

Maternity photography sessions can be held outdoors or in the Melton studio, depending on the style you're looking for.

For families in Melton and Melbourne's western suburbs, I can recommend locations that work beautifully for maternity photos, or we can keep things simple and relaxed at home or in the studio.

The most important thing? Don't wait until you're uncomfortable.

If you're considering maternity photos, my biggest piece of advice is don't leave it too late.

You don't need to wait until your bump is at its biggest. You don't need to look a certain way. And you don't need to know exactly how to pose.

My goal is to make your maternity session relaxed and enjoyable, with plenty of guidance along the way.

These photographs are about remembering what this season of your life felt like, the excitement, the anticipation and the little person you hadn't met yet.

If you're looking for a maternity photographer in Melton or Melbourne's western suburbs, I'd love to help you capture this special part of your journey.
