Newborn Photography With a Premature Baby: A Beautiful Session With an 8-Week-Old in Melton

Recently, I had a beautiful family come to my studio with their little boy, who was 8 weeks old when they contacted me about newborn photos.

His parents weren't sure if he would still be suitable for a newborn session. He had been born prematurely and, after spending some time in hospital, he was finally home with his family. They wanted to capture this special time with their baby, but weren't sure if they had missed the window for newborn photos.

When they got in touch, we had a chat about their little boy and his journey so far. Because he had been born prematurely, I considered his corrected age when talking with them about whether a newborn session would be suitable.

Although he was 8 weeks old, he was actually only 3 days corrected when he came into the studio for his session.

Every baby is different, and especially when a baby has arrived prematurely, I think it's important to have a conversation with parents rather than simply looking at the number of weeks since their birth.

For this little guy, everything came together beautifully.

A relaxed newborn photography session

One of the things I love most about newborn photography is that there doesn't need to be a perfect timeline or a perfectly sleepy baby.

My sessions are relaxed and baby-led, so we take our time and work around what your baby needs on the day.

This little guy did such a fantastic job.

He settled beautifully, we were able to capture all those gorgeous tiny details, and we also spent time photographing him with his parents and capturing their little family together.

There was no rushing and no pressure to make the session fit into a particular timeframe, we simply followed his lead.

And that's really what I want families to feel when they come into my studio.

You don't need to worry about whether your baby will sleep or cooperate.

And you definitely don't need to worry that you've somehow missed your chance to have newborn photos taken.

You haven't necessarily missed your newborn photos

While the first few weeks are often ideal for traditional newborn photography, there isn't one exact age where you suddenly can't have beautiful photographs of your baby.

Premature babies are one example of why I think it's important to look at the individual baby and their circumstances rather than just going by their chronological age.

The photos were so special to his family

The best part of this session was hearing how happy his parents were with their photographs.

They were able to have the newborn photos they had hoped for, even though their little boy's journey into the world hadn't quite followed the timeline they originally imagined.

Newborn photography isn't about getting the perfect pose or having a baby who sleeps through the entire session.

It's about slowing down for a little while and capturing your baby exactly as they are at this stage of their life.

Those tiny fingers and toes, the little faces they make, the way they fit into your arms and, most importantly, the connection between your little family.
