What Is the Best Age for Newborn Photography in Melbourne?

One of the biggest concerns I hear from new parents is, “Is my baby too old for newborn photos?” or “My baby has already arrived, is it too late to book?”

The answer is almost always no.

While there is a beautiful window in those early days when babies are often sleepier and more settled, there is no single moment that determines whether you can capture meaningful memories of your baby.

As a newborn photographer in Melbourne, my goal is to create a calm, supported experience where your family feels comfortable and ready, while also helping you understand what timing may work best for the type of images you are hoping for.

The Ideal Newborn Photography Window: 5–14 Days

For those classic sleepy, curled-up newborn portraits, my preferred time to photograph babies is between 5 and 14 days old.

During this stage, many newborns are still very sleepy, naturally comfortable in curled up positions, and often settle beautifully into gentle newborn poses. It is also when we can capture those tiny details that change so quickly, their delicate features, little fingers, flaky newborn skin, and those precious sleepy expressions.

However, every baby is different.

Some babies are wonderfully settled within this window, while others may need a little more time to adjust to the world. Newborn sessions are always guided by your baby's cues, comfort, and individual personality.

Have You Missed the First Two Weeks?

If your baby is already a few weeks old, please don't think you've missed your opportunity.

I typically photograph newborns up to 6 weeks old, and beautiful newborn images can absolutely still be created beyond those first two weeks.

Older newborns often bring something different to their session, more eye contact, bigger stretches, adorable expressions, and little glimpses of their personality beginning to shine through.

The most important thing is that your family feels ready.

Newborn Photography Should Feel Relaxed, Not Rushed

The early weeks after birth can look different for every family. Your recovery, your birth experience, your baby's arrival, and how you are feeling all matter.

The ideal time for newborn photos is a balance between capturing that sleepy newborn stage and making sure you feel physically and emotionally ready to enjoy the experience.

A calm, connected session will always create more meaningful memories than rushing before you are ready.

When Should You Book Your Melbourne Newborn Photography Session?

If you are expecting, I recommend booking your newborn photography session during pregnancy. This allows me to reserve space around your due date and gives us the best chance of capturing those beautiful early newborn days.

Once your baby arrives, we will confirm a session date based on their arrival and how your family is settling in.

If your baby has already arrived and you haven't booked yet, please don't hesitate to reach out. Your baby is still little, and your story is still worth documenting.
